Why We Run…

We are now only two weeks away from our second annual No Child Wet Behind 5k and Family Fun Run!

Last year was a tremendous success, and we owe so much gratitude to this incredible community. The support we received for this national event far surpassed our expectations! We are so excited to be offering this event once again this year.

I wanted to take a minute to explain exactly why this cause is so dear to our hearts here at West Georgia Doula. There are so many needs in the world at large, and in our very own community. So what made us choose to attack diaper need? The answer is really found in the facts.

  • 1 in 3 families report diaper need.
  • 3 million children under the age of 3 live in poor or low income families, making up nearly 50% of that age group.
  • There are no government funded programs to assist families that suffer from inadequate diaper supply.
  • Studies show that inadequate diaper changes increases a child’s risk of illness, abuse and even infanticide. Infants require up to 12 diapers a day, and toddlers about 8.
  • Disposable diapers cost between $80-100 a month per baby. The price is higher when transportation is limited and diapers must be purchased at a corner convenience store.
  • Our community has families experiencing diaper need right now.

Those are just the rough facts. Now, allow me to get personal here. As a mother myself, I cannot begin to imagine having nowhere to turn if I needed help with giving my son diapers. We all know the cycle. Your baby has a wet or dirty diaper on for too long, and the next thing you know she has a rash. She is cranky and irritable, so you clean her up, put some ointment on the rash, and change her diaper. She perks up and is back to her sweet self. Sadly, for many babies in the US this is not the reality. Instead, they suffer through long hours wearing the same diaper because their parents cannot afford to provide them with enough clean ones. Their rashes worsen, as do their moods. The cries frustrate their parents, who lash out from frustration. We can help break this cycle for many children in our community. No Child Wet Behind is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of these children and their families. West Georgia Doula is dedicated to doing so right here in Carrollton.

Many people wonder why No Child Wet Behind does not accept cloth diapers. Often, studies show that over time the investment in cloth can save a family with one child up to $1200 per year. However, there are so many reason cloth diapering is not a viable option for many low income families. First, there is the upfront cost. Today’s cloth can cost anywhere from $5 to $45 per diaper! This includes the cost of the cover, inner cloth, and liners. Granted, the $45 diapers are custom, one-of- a- kind orders, but that just goes to show you that this is not your momma’s cloth! Even the cost of just the $5 diapers adds up. An infant goes through up to 12 diapers per day. This means the initial cost at minimum for cloth is $60 (plus shipping and tax). That is the bare minimum, and would require parents to have to wash their cloth diapers every single day. Many low income families do not have access to washers and dryers at home and rely upon laundry mats. I do not know of any laundry mats that allow the washing of cloth diapers. This is to say nothing of the time investment spent in washing cloth if both parents are working full time for minimum wage.

Which brings us to another point; if both parents are working, the child will need to be in a daycare environment. Most daycare centers, even free and subsidized facilities, will not accept cloth diapers and require that you send a day’s supply of disposable diapers for your child. This means a parent who is unable to afford diapers cannot go to work or school.

So, though calculations suggest that cloth could be cheaper in regards to cash investment long term, it’s impractical for many lower income families. This is why No Child Wet Behind is so dedicated to filling this specific need of providing these families with disposable diapers.

Please, won’t you join us for this fantastic event? Last year we collected over 5,000 diapers and accepted cash donations that allowed us to purchase almost 10,000 more! That is about enough to provide 5 children with a year’s worth of diapers! This is a day filled with fun for the whole family, and for such a great cause. Children 12 and under can run or walk for free, and we will have several activities for them (and you) to enjoy before and after the race! You can register online at www.active.com or on race day! To guarantee that you will receive a shirt, you must register by April 28th. For information about sponsoring, please contact Heather Reckner at info@westgeorgiadoula.com.
